Exercise: We Hate It, Our Bodies Love It

Exercise is one of those problematic things. We know we need it. We know we feel better when we do it. But far too often we just can’t get in the groove and keep it going.

This Spring, our intrepid Office Administrator, Darrell, had his annual. His Nurse Practitioner told him his numbers were all normal, but on the HIGH side. He needed to lose 20 pounds, eat more green leafy veggies, boost his fruit intake, eat less meat, and watch his carbs. BLAH BLAH BLAH.

Well, this time was a bit different, he’s now 46 and can’t blame eating off his child’s plate for his dad bod (his “child” has 4 legs and barks).

He talked openly with his NP about back and knee pain, and that he couldn’t seem to get in the groove of exercise. His NP agreed that exercising and getting into a regular routine would actually help the back and knee pain go away. It would also increase energy and motivation. The body loves to repair itself.

Long story short, Darrell has been working out regularly since Independence Day, and tries to trade his LaCroix for more Eau de Saint Louis. There’s been no significant weight loss, but the knee pain is almost gone, the back pain diminishes daily, sleep is better, and his energy is higher.

Funny thing is, the more regular the routine gets, the more he looks for opportunities to exercise – motivation.

So imagine his surprise when he heard this article about how exercise can help reduce chronic pain on KMWU Monday morning. Nothing new, but it’s nice to have your hard work validated every now and then!
