Madam C.J. Walker
Many words can be used to describe Madam C.J. Walker: entrepreneur, philanthropist, political and social activist, self-made, millionaire, African-American.
Sarah Breedlove Walker (December 23, 1867-May 25, 1919), known as Madam C.J. Walker, built a cosmetic empire in the early 1900s becoming one of the first female millionaires in the country and is considered the first African-American female millionaire.
She took her personal issue with hair loss and learned how to combat it. She then trained other women to sell the product and endeavored to greatness.
She supported those around her with trust and guidance. When she moved to Harlem from Indianapolis she left the factory in the charge of her forewoman. She trusted her daughter to grow the company. Most of all she gave back to her community through philanthropy.
